The invention concerns a safety device for a structure having a great horizontal span, consisting of sections abutted on one another, such as a crane jib 2. This device comprises a life line cable V to which an individual protective harness 11 is attached via a safety line 12 equipped with a fastening member 13 sliding freely on the cable. The latter is made up of cable portions 14 abutted on one another, each of which has a length equal to that of the section 3 of the structure 2 with which it is associated, the cable sections being connected to one another via connection means 19 which permit their separation. An anchoring point 23 is provided at least at one of the ends of each section, and the safety line 12 comprises a second fastening member 20 by means of which it can be attached temporarily to the said anchoring point.
