Process for the preparation of 1-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)- 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole by reaction of 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol sulphate with an imidazole derivative of general formula: IMAGE (X denotes a hydrogen atom or a radical which can be removed by acidic hydrolysis or by alcoholysis), followed by the hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the product obtained.
