Iron-based magnetic material surface doped with a lanthanide, the said material being in the form of particles whose iron atoms are combined with nitrogen atoms or are partially substituted by cobalt atoms especially. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lanthanide is neodymium or samarium. A method for preparing the said particles from precursors by treatment of the said precursors by a solution containing lanthanide ions and then heat treatment in a gaseous reducing phase.
