Process capable of inhibiting the growth of microorganisms in a culture medium before its use, characterised by the fact that its pH is adjusted to a value of between 4.5 and 5.5 and that it is made to contain a proportion of 0.5 to 20 %, preferably 2 to 15 % of propionic acid.
