PURPOSE:To determine the temperature of a liquid by detecting the change in the index of refraction at the boundary surface caused by the change in the liquid temperature, due to light passing between the liquid and a certain substance, as the change in the amount of light received with a light sensor. CONSTITUTION:Plates S and T each having a transparent portion are placed opposite each other. A convex lens 9 and a lamp 18 are provided on the back side of the plate T. A light sensor 22 is provided on the back side of the plate S. This arrangement is made waterproof and placed in a liquid. When the liquid is at a certain temperature, light from a light source S is sent through a lens 9 to the liquid. The light comes to the position A on a diffused reflective portion (white matted paper sheet) 53. The light moves toward the point B as the liquid temperature rises. If the sensor 22 is placed near the point B, the more the light path approaches the sensor 22, the more amount of light enters the sensor 22 and greater change is received with the sensor 22. Connecting the sensor 22 and a resistance element in series and further connecting them to a stabilizing power source, and measuring the voltage applied between both terminals of the resistance element, the liquid temperature can be determined from the relation between the voltage and the liquid temperature.
