PURPOSE: To increase a volumetric capacity of a starting material in pressure swing adsorption and to improve productivity and recovery of N2 from air. CONSTITUTION: A coconut shell char having a high oxygen volumetric capacity is provided by crushing and classifying coconut shells to form granules, which are heated in flowing inert gas at a temp. ramp rate of about 2 deg. to 12 deg.C per minute to a peak temp. of 775 deg. to 900 deg.C, which is then held so that the total heating time is up to 8 hours. Thereafter, granular char is cooled in an inert gas atmosphere. The granular char thus produced has oxygen selectivity in air separation without further modification to narrow the openings of its micropores.
