PURPOSE:To allow a visually-handicapped person to put a text into braille without trouble by selecting/fixing the text for every phrase which text is read with voice in various ways, and automatically converting the read text to braille. CONSTITUTION:A text is input with use of an inputting device 1-1. If the text is a printed matter, it is read and inputted by an OCR or a text proofreading device, etc. A phrase part 1-2 divides the input sentence into phrases with use of a dictionary 1-5, and sends the phrases to a judging part 1-3. The judging part 1-3 activates one of a sound synthesizing part 1-4, a dictionary registering part 1-6 and a braille forming part 1-9 in accordance with an instruction from an operator through an interface part 1-7. At this time, the sound synthesizing part 1-4 outputs by sounds candidates of readings of the phrase being processed on the basis of a string of phonetic symbols corresponding to the phrase which is information from the dictionary 1-5. The diction ary registering part 1-6 registers dictionary information consisting of pairs of phonetic symbols and parts of speech for the string of characters to be registered in accordance with the input data and an instruction from the operator. On the other hand, the braille forming part 1-9 converts the finally-selected string of phonetic symbols to a string of braille.
