PURPOSE:The hydrogenation of furfurylamine (abbreviated to FAM) and/or tetrahydrofurfurylamine (abbreviated to 4HFAM) is carried out in the presence of a cobalt base catalyst under specific conditions to achieve the high-yield production of 5-aminpentanol and piperidine. CONSTITUTION:The liquid-phase catalytic hydrogenation of FAM and/or 4HFAM is conducted in the presence of a cobalt-based catalyst at 150-300 deg.C under 1-100atm hydrogen pressure, as the conversion of 4HFAM is controlled to 3-70mol%, to give the objective compound. EFFECT:The use of a cobalt-based catalyst enables the production of 5-amino- pentanol which has been though impossible to be produced with a conventional catalyst. The reaction condition for producing the objective compound can be optimized to give the objective compound in high efficiency.
