METHOD FOR APPROXIMATING A VALUE WHICH IS A NON-LINEAR FUNCTION OF THE LINEAR AVERAGE OF PIXEL DATAABSTRACTA system for weighting nonlinear, e.g.logarithmic, pixel data as part of a missing pixelinterpolation. This is accomplished to generate aweighted average of the logarithmic intensity valuesfor those pixels which surround the missing pixel inorder to approximate the logarithm of the linearaverage of these pixel values. Two weightingcoefficients of unequal value are selected so thattheir sum equals the quantity one. The larger ofthe logarithmic values is weighted by multiplyingthe larger logarithmic pixel value by the largerweighting coefficient, and then by adding to thisquantity the smaller logarithmic pixel value whichhas been multiplied by the smaller weightingcoefficient. The result is a weighted logarithmicaverage which approximates the log of the linearaverage.
