Surface treating agent (a) is added to a silica sol dispersed in a hydrophilic organic solvent to make the surface of the silica sol oleophilic. The sol is sepd. into liq. and solid silica by ultracentriging. The liquid is removed and oleophilic organic solvent is added to disperse the solid silica in it. Pref. (a) include cpds. (I)-(III) or their mixt. having the formulas; x is 1, 2 or 3; R1 is H, opt. branched or cyclo alkyl gps., alkenyl, aryl, or their functional organic gps. some of whose H atoms are replaced by halogen, cyano, amino, epoxy, hydroxy, alkoxy, ester, silyl, ketone, phosphine or alkylthio gps.
