New thermotropic aromatic polyester(s) - contain units derived from aromatic di:acids and hydroxy-acids, Di:phenol(s) and 1,1-bis-4-carboxy:phenoxy-phenyl-cycloalkane(s)

New thermotropic aromatic polyesters (I) are claimed, with repeating units of formula -CO-Ar1-O- (II), -CO-Ar2-CO- (III), -O-Ar3-O- (IV) and (IV) and (V) as shown, in the mol. ratios (II):(IV) = (20-85):(80-15), (IV):((III)+(V)) = (1-0.95):(1-1.05) and (III):(V) = (20-99):(80:1); Ar1-Ar3 = 6-18C arylene, opt. substd. with 1-4 Hal atoms or 1-4C alk(ox)yl; R1, R2 = H, Hal, 1-8C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, 6-10C aryl or 7-12C aralkyl; R3, R4 = H or 1-6C alkyl (same or different on each X, but with at least one ring C atom substd. with 2 alkyl gps.); X = carbon; m = 4-7. Pref. mol. ratio (II):(III) = (50-80):(20-50) and (III)-(V) = (80-99):(20-1); units (V) are 1,1-bis-(4-phenoxyphenylene) -3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane units. USE/ADVANMTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of mouldings, filaments, fibre and film (claimed). The invention provides (I) with high Tg and high thermal dimensional stability, combined with low m.pt., i.e. combining good processing properties with the well-known good mechanical properties of liq. crystalline materials. (I) ae useful for the prodn. of, e.g. electronic components, parts for chemical plant, interior parts for aircraft, medical equipment, etc..
