Computer numerically controlled cutting system, giving shaped cutting to fabrics or paper or film has a drive system (26,27) moving the cutting head (25) along one cutting plane along a co-ordinate line (Y). Actual cutting points (S) along the line are set as co-ordinates by the position of the cutting head (25) on one side, and by the lateral positioning of the fabric (4), through a drive which moves it along the other co-ordinate line (X). Pattern edges are identified by a photo-electric unit (24) or a mechanical monitor, to give the co-ordinates of the monitored points (A) along the pattern edge during cutting, and while the fabric is moved along one or both directions. Monitored co-ordinates are converted into electrical signals, at the monitoring time point, or the image (24) is passed to a computer which gives the various monitored points through a program working on the run of contrast or brightness signals along the pattern edge. Control (28) generates cutting signals and setting data for the first drive (27), the cutting head (25), the drive (21,22) to move the fabric (4) and/or for the tracking of the photoelectric unit (24) according to the monitor's co-ordinate signals. Photoelectrical unit (24) tracks the fabric (4) along the determined cutting line, synchronised with the cutting head (25), or the cutting head (25) movement is by a separate drive from the drive to the monitor (24). During a cutting action of the fabric (4) along a line at right angles to the fabric movement line, the material (4) is steadily moved and, on a reverse of the cutting line against the current direction of fabric movement, the direction of fabric (4) travel is changed over.
