Electrostrictive fibres (10) are embedded in an electrically conductive matrix (20) as electrical opposite pole or in an non-conductice matrix with electrically conducting fibres. The electrostrictive fibres consist of electrically conducting fibres (12), e.g. C or SiC fibres, coated with an electrostrictive material (15), e.g. Ba titanate, Pb zirconate. Conductive matrix can be of conductive polymers. USE/ADVANTAGE - Gives controllable elastic characteristics, with defined amisotropy, usable as sensor for forces. (5pp Dwg. No.2/2)
