Use of topical compsn. contg. 0.2-25 wt.% omega-3-fatty acid, esp. eccosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or its physiologically acceptable salts or ester (in pure form or as a component of fish oil), plus usual auxiliaries and additives for treatment of burns is new. EPA is present as highly purified fish oil concentrate contg. at least 25 wt.% EPA (expressed in terms of methyl esters) and derived from cold-water fish such as mackerel, sardine, herring or salmon. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsns. provide rapid healing of burns with almost no side effects. EPA probably inhibits inflammatory mediators and, unlike omega-6 fatty acids, penetrates the skin rapidly without needing a penetration enhancer. EPA is already known for treatment of abnormal skin pigmentation, psoriasis, eczema, periodontitis, alopecia seborrhoea, impotence, inflammation, etc.
