Fatty alcohol polyalkylene glycol ethers (I) are prepd. by (a) reacting 1 mol. of fatty alcohols of formula R1-OH with 1-20 mols of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, in presence of a laminar cpd., (b) treating the prod. with a coagulating agent and opt. with a base, and (c) sepg. the coagulate formed by the laminar cpd. and the coagulating agent, opt. in presence of a filter aid. Satd. 8-18C fatty alcohols are used. The laminar cpd. is pref. calcined hydrotalcite, which before calcination has the formula MxIIMIII(OH)y(CO3)z.nH2O, or a hydrophobised hydrotalcite of formula MaIIMIII(OH)b(CO3)cAd.mH2O. The amt. is 0.1-5 wt.%, w.r.t. prod. MII = divalent metal ion; MIII = trivalent metal ion; x, a = 1-5; y is greater than z; y + 2z + 2x + 3; m, n = 0-10; A = dianion of a 4-44C aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or 2 anions of 2-34C aliphatic monocarboxylic acids; b is greater than 2a + 2; b + 2(c + d) = 2a + 3; c + d is less than 0.5; c, d = greater than 0. Alkoxylation is with 1-10 mols of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, at 120-220 deg.C and 1-5 bars. The coagulating agent is an aliphatic or aromatic (di)carboxylic acid, aminoacid, or oxo- or hydroxycarboxylic acid, esp. lactic acid. The reaction mixt. treated with coagulating agent is treated with a base, esp. a soln. of NaOH or Na methylate, until the amt. of salt formed from the coagulating agent and the base is at least 0.2 wt.%, w.r.t. prod.. The coagulating agent may also be a resin, natural rubber or a polysaccharide. Treatment is at 0-150 deg.C, using 0.1-10 wt.% of coagulating agent, w.r.t. prod.. The coagulate formed is sepd. by filtration. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are more easily filtered. (I) are used in washing, rinsing and cleaning compsns., and in compsns. for care of the hair and body
