Solid esterquats. are prepd. by quaternising fatty acid triethanolamine esters of formula (I) with an alkylating agent, in presence of (a) a fatty alcohol, fatty acid monoglyceride or dialkyl ether as dispersant, and opt. of (b) a fatty alcohol polyglycol ether, fatty acid monoglyceride polyglycol ether, fatty acid polyglyceride polyglycol ether, polysorbate or alkyloligoglucoside as emulsifier. In the formula R1CO=6-22C (un)satd. acyl gp.; R2, R3=H or R1CO; and m+n+p=0-10. Pref., the emulsifier is an adduct of 10-40 FO onto esters of 12-18C fatty acids with technical oligoglycerol mixts. or onto sorbitan esters with lauric, palmitic, stearic and/or oleic acid. USE/ADVANTAGE - A hair care compsn. contg. 14-86 wt.% of (I), 14-86% of dispersant, 5-30% of emulsifier and water to 100% is claimed. The compsn. may be a shampoo, rinse or setting compsn. (I) have better dispersibility in water and stability on storage, and are free from solvents, esp. alcohols. Aq. solns. of (I) remain homogeneous, with constant viscosity, on storage. The hair is more easily combed, and electrostatic charge is reduced.
