The mechanism seals a chamber watertight, having guides round the chamber mouth, in which a plug moving in the vertical direction works, so as to shut the mouth off at the bottom at least. The plug (1) moves without a drive mechanism, typically under gravity. It can work via holders (3) at the guides, typically chains with counterweights and/or an eddy-current brake, and can be arranged to lock automatically into engagement with the guides at the shut position, typically by a spring-loaded latch (7) engaging behind bolts (11) on the plug.
