In a traction control system for motor vehicles, it is monitored whether non-driving wheel speed occurs during the time interval from a point when traction control is started to a point when a predetermined time period elapses therefrom; and in case no occurrence of non-driving wheel speed is detected during the above time interval, the throttle opening degree command value prevailing at the end of the foregoing time interval is decreased down to a predetermined lower limit value in response thereto, while at the same time the control is changed to a low- mu control mode.
