The invention relates to a process for preparing aryl ester amides of phosphonous acid of formula (I), where R1 is either a univalent residue which stands for certain aromatic hydrocarbon residues that may carry substituents, or a divalent residue which stands for a phenylene, naphthylene or biphenyl residue that may carry non-aromatic hydrocarbon residues as substituents, R2 is a non-aromatic HCR, aryl or possibly substituted aryl methyl residue, R3 stands for hydrogen, alkoxy or alkylthio or a group mentioned under R2, and n = 1 or 2. A halide R1(-X)n, where R1 and n have the above-mentioned meaning and X is a halogen with an atomic weight of at least 35, is reacted with magnesium to form the corresponding Grignard compounds R1(mgX)n, which are then reacted with aryl ester amide halides of phosphonous acid of formula (II), where R2 to R5 have the above-mentioned meaning and X is chlorine or bromine, to form the ester amides of phosphonous acid (I). The invention also relates to certain compounds of formulae (I) and (II), to a process for preparing compounds of formula (II), the use of compounds of formula (I) as such or in combination with a phenolic antioxidant to stabilize plastics, as well as the plastic moulding materials so stabilized.
