PURPOSE:To obtain the title new compound useful as an intermediate for optical resolution and a synthetic raw material for drugs such as antibiotics, etc. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by the formula (* is asymmetric carbon atom). The compound is obtained by dissolving (+ or -)-2-methylpiperazine and optically active mandelic acid in a mixed solvent preferably in an acetone- containing solvent to form two kinds of diasetereomer salts and then preferentially crystallizing optically active 2-methylpiperazine mandelate as an acetone- containing diastereomer salt.
