PURPOSE: To provide a pile-up rib waveguide connected to a standard optical fiber in a low loss. ;CONSTITUTION: Values which permits the mode type of light (wave length is about 0.8-0.9μm) being propagated through the projecting rib waveguide 21 to be approximated to the base mode type of light being propagated through the optical fiber 31 are respectively assigned to eight structural and componential parameters, that is, the height(huc) and refractive index(nuc) of an upper part cladding 23, the height(hlc) and refractive index(nlc) of an lower part cladding 29, the height(hf) and refractive index(nf) of a core 25 and the width(w) and height(hr) of a rib 27. Then, connection where a power loss becomes less than 10% is provided. A method for selecting the parameter of the projecting rib waveguide is also presented.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
