A floating play item for swimming lessons is provided with a number of rectangular, soft and dimensionally stable float elements which, on their sides, are provided with coupling components for coupling the float elements together. A flat base element is provided on the top side with a shallow recess, leaving a seating edge clear. This can be used as a bath for pre-school children or as the base for a number of float elements which fit together in the form of a stepped pyramid, each upper float element fitting into a recess in the topside of a lower float element. A channel-shaped float element with an at least approximately flat top side and with slightly raised sides can be used as a slide or walking mat. A float element provided with the four side walls can be used as a games box or for a floating house.
