- 28 -AbstractA control system for governing multipleoperating mode adjustable suspension units in anautomotive vehicle with an adjustment mechanism forreceiving an adjustment control signal for placing thesuspension units in any of the multiple adjustment modes,and a fault warning mechanism for detecting an inabilityof the adjustment mechanism to adjust one or more of thesuspension units and for generating a fault warningsignal in response to such detection. The diagnosticmechanism responsive to such fault warning signal isoperatively connected with the adjustment mechanism fordetermining the extent which the ability to adjust thesuspension units has been impaired and a mode selectionmechanism operatively connected with the diagnosticmechanism for deciding into which of the multipleoperating modes the suspension units should be directedbased upon the determination of the diagnostic mechanism,with the mode selection mechanism further including amechanism for generating an adjustment control signalcorresponding to the operating modes and forcommunicating such signal to the adjustment mechanism.l290K
