The product in powder form is characterized in that the particles are non white and coloured with the exception of lamellar iron oxide and have a size of less than 200 microns. A synthetic melanic pigment, formed in situ by the oxidation of an indole compound, is included in and/or on the particles. The invention also concerns a process for the preparation of said product. Application in cosmetics, especially in make-up for the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, nails, etc., and/or the skin and in affording protection to the skin from ultraviolet rays.
