A synthetic active transport method for the transport of molecules from the cytoplasm, across the nuclear membrane and into the nucleus is provided. Compositions useful for transport are also provided comprising hn-RNP-molecule complexes. By methods of the present invention, the expression of protein by a cell can be modulated. Other cellular functions or activities can also be altered in accordance with methods of the present invention.
