For isolating and absorbing vibration induced reactive torque from adversely affecting a motor drive system a clutch/damper is inserted between the motor (100) and the driven mass (106). It variably engages a gear coupled to the drive motor and to a load mass to permit normal drive in the absence of excessive reactive torque forces and to allow the motor to continue to drive against a slipping load in the presence of excessive reactive torque forces. Position feedback (110) may be employed in the drive system to compensate for the small errors induced by the slippage.
