Nonlinear and adaptive control of motor drives with compensation of drive electronics.

This thesis presents new approaches to modeling, parameter estimation, and control of electric motor drives. Power electronic converters and inverters are modeled from physical principles as piecewise linear nonlinearities. These new models facilitate development of three types of compensation methods: first, new duty ratio laws that provide compensation when programmed in the PWM logic; second, pre-calibrated converter and inverter compensators that can be added to any motor drive controller; third, adaptive motor drive controllers that provide automatic compensation through on-line adaptation. The first two techniques are not limited to the control of motor drives and can be used to improve input-output characteristics of any full-bridge converter or three-phase inverter. Adaptive techniques improve system performance without requiring a priori knowledge of any system parameters. This thesis also presents optimization-based parameter estimation methods that can be used to estimate parameters of the drive, the motor, and the load, for off-line pre-calibration or for on-line self-tuning.
