Process for manufacturing a wear-resistant sliding surface in joint endoprostheses made from pure titanium or a titanium alloy. An extremely resistant sliding layer of adequate thickness which can be subsequently machined can be produced cost-effectively if the sliding surfaces are scanned by means of a laser beam to melt down the surface of the titanium or titanium alloy of the prosthesis. At the same time, at least one reaction partner is added to the molten titanium alloy; this results in the formation of an alloy of the titanium or the titanium alloy with the at least one reaction partner.
