METHOD OF PREPARING EUTECTIC OR HYPER-EUTECTIC ALLOYS AND COMPOSITES BASED THEREON

Describes a process for preparing a eutectic metal alloy or refined or enhanced hyper-eutectic and which comprises: melting the eutectic metal alloy or hyper-eutectic, adding particles of a nonmetallic refractory material to the metal matrix molten, mixing the molten metallic alloy and the particles of refractory mßteriau, and casting the resulting mixture under conditions producing the precipitation of at least one intermetallic phase of the molten metal matrix during solidification, so that the intermetallic products formed during the solidification wet and cover said refractory particles. The added particles may be very small and only be used to refine the intermetallics precipitation products in the alloy, or they may be larger and serve as reinforcing particles in a composite comprising the alloy. The products are also new.
