ANTI-HIV ACTIVITY OF LIPOSOMAL NYSTATIN AND AMPHOTERICIN B

A method of inhibiting viral replication of HIV-1. The method includes administering to a subject infected with HIV-1 a pharmaceutically effective amount of a liposomal composition comprising at least one lipid and a polyene selected from nystatin and amphotericin B. It has been shown that these liposomal compositions are selectively toxic to the cells infected with HIV. Preferably, the composition comprises nystatin, dimyristol of phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl glycerol dimyristol, the weight ratio between the two latter components being about 7-3.
