METHOD AND DEVICE FOR SEPARATION OF BRAN HULLS FROM WHEAT KERNELS

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURESignificant improvements to the milling of wheatkernels are possible by sequentially removing the bran layers ofthe kernels prior to processing in general accordance with theconventional milling principles. The wheat kernels arepreprocessed by means of a number of friction and abrasionoperations to peel or strip the various layers of bran from thekernels. A series of friction machines followed by abrasionmachines progressively remove the bran layers and separate thesame into generally pre-identified bran layer mixtures. Up toabout 75% of the bran can be removed with the remaining branbeing essentially confined to the kernel crease and removedduring the conventional milling operation. Such preprocessedkernels, when milled in the conventional manner, have higheryields due to less bran contamination. This selective removal ofthe bran layers also facilitates low cost production of specialtybran products or selective reintroduction of bran layers to flourafter, or during, further milling.
