The plant includes a vertical pillar on which a slide is driven vertically; and the slide has a vertical pivot shaft for a horizontal arm fitted with a clamp, from which the consumable electrode is suspended in the mould. When the slide is lowered, the electrode is lowered into the melt in the mould. The clamp is fitted with two independently actuated work cylinders, which are employed to tilt the electrode on two horizontal axes (X-X; Y-Y) which are aligned at 90 degrees w.r.t. each other. The work cylinders are fitted with levers which tilt the electrode so the latter can be kept on the axis of the mould without touching the mould walls, and by remote control.
