Partial esters (I) of satd. straight-chain 22-34C monocarboxylic acids (II) with polyols contg. at least 3C atoms and at least 2 OH gps. (III), having on average at least one free OH gp., are claimed. (I) are mfd. by esterification of (II) with (III) in the presence of catalysts. Specifically, (II) are montanic acids (IV) obtd. from montan wax; (III) have upto 10C atoms and up to 6 OH gps., pref. (III) are trimethylolpropane, di-trimethylolpropane, dipentaerythritol, mannitol, or (esp. pref.), glycerol, diglycerol, pentaerythritol, neopentyl, glycol, 1,4-butanediol or sorbitol. These esp. pref. polyols are used with (IV) in mol. ratios from 1:1 to 1:2 (esp. 1:2), 1:1 to 1:3 (esp. 1:1.5), 1:1 to 1:3 (esp. 1:2), 1:1 to 1:1.2 (esp. 1:1), 1:1, and 1:1 to 1:5 (esp. 1:3), respectively.
