This is a shut-off appliance for liqs. and gases in pipes, and in partic. for escaping hazardous matter such as toxic gases, environmentally harmful liqs., and high-pressure oil/gas mixt. The appliance has a container (1) that forms a circular saw or a face-milling cutter. It has saw teeth (2) or cutting edges (2) on its upright outer surface and can be rotated about its axis and supported in a slide (3) against pressure. This "dish-saw" (1), with the slide (3), is connected by a rod (9) to the drive housing (5) and drive (6), and, in the housings (4,8,19), can be pushed against the pipe (24) by a drive arrangement (12) with a rod (11). The "dish-saw" cuts through the pipe, and the flow is diverted at the same time. A number of features and variants are claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The appliance is light and readily handled, and can be kept ready for use where it might be needed. It can shut off the damaged pipe upstream of the damage and safely divert the flow; flow pressure after shutting off is not unduly increased. Flow diversion can be to a tank or elsewhere, and, after shutting off, production or other work, including repairs, can be done.
