This is a method and associated equipment for shutting off the escape of natural gas, petroleum, water, and other escaping fluids, and extinguishing burning gas or oil wells. Large-bore boring equipment, or manual means, are used to obtain access. An oblique boring is made past the damage, and formed into a cavity around the intact piping, where the cementing and the section of pipe concerned are removed and the escaping fluid is shut off and the fire thus extinguished. USE/ADVANTAGE - Escaping oil can be shut off, and fires extinguished, by methods and equipment which can be used irrespective of whether the well area is mined (as in Kuwait). Escaping gas and other fluids, including water, can be similarly stopped, and the method may be of use in nuclear power stations.
