A process for the electrochemical prodn. of metal-contg. electrolytes is claimed, in which the metal is connected in a cell as the working electrode and the coating layer region characteristic of the metal is traversed with potential cycles. Also claimed are: (i) the use of the above process to make precious metal electrolytes; (ii) the precious metal electrolytes, as made in (i), contg. Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Cr, Ti, W or Ag; (iii) the use of the process to fractionally separate ore concentrates; and (iv) an appts. for carrying out the process comprising at least one generator and power amplifier and an electrochemical cell. Catholyte and anolyte regions are separated by a diaphragm, a semi-permeable membrane or an appts., the catholyte being removed continually from the system. ADVANTAGE - Passivating reactions are avoided.
