Prodn. of branched polyesters with Mn 400-200,000, contg. phenolic OH gps. (I), involves esterification of dicarboxylic acids with dialcohols by known methods using 0.5-10 mol.% branching agents (II) and 3-20 mol.% phenols (III) as chain cleavage agents. In addn. to phenolic OH, (III) also contain a carboxylic acid substit. or aliphatic OH gp., and have no alkyl gps. in the ortho position to the phenolic OH. Also claimed are phenolic OH-contg. polyesters (I) with no alkyl gps. ortho to the phenolic OH, obtd. by this process. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful, in combination with other diphenols, for the prodn. of polyester-polycarbonates (IV). Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (IV) by reaction of diphenols, 1-70 wt.% (I) (w.r.t. total diphenol), opt. normal chain cleavage agents and opt. other branching agents with phosgene in homogeneous soln. or 2-phase systems.
