The tool has a tool carriage (6) that can operate over a specific linear range of movement (2). Accurate positioning within this range is provided by a precision linear scale fixed (10a) to the frame. A reading head for the scale is fixed to the carriage. Protection against the possibility of the system moving beyond set limits is provided by limit detectors (8a). These are set at both ends of the guideways.
