The method involves calculating a limit threshold (2) at which processing of measurement data is only just possible at full utilization of a given system parameter (6), such as available storage space. A user-defined threshold (1) is set by means of a threshold regulator (3) which has two differently marked, adjacent threshold ranges, the first range (4) lying below the limit threshold, and the second range (5) lying above the limit threshold. When inside the first threshold range, the data processing is adapted such that the adapted processing is only just possible at full utilization of the given system parameter.
