THe scanner has a x-ray emitter (1) on one side of a transport conveyor (6) and a detector (5) with a row of detector elements on the other side. An electronic system (9) generates x-ray shadow images of the test material on a display (8). The emitter is pulsed during transportation of the test material and the integrating detector is only active during the pulse periods. The emitter is controlled so that the number of pulses per unit length is constant. ADVANTAGE - X-ray source activation time optimised to scan vol. of test material, reduced quantisation noise
