The method involves coupling at least a first coherent electromagnetic beam (14) into the fluid phase of an inhomogeneous medium, transmitting the beam through a measurement zone (18), producing an interference pattern, projecting it onto an evaluation device (22) and measuring its degree of modulation. The interference pattern is produced by superimposing the transmitted coherent beam and a second transmitted coherent measurement beam (16) or a coherent reference beam. The degree of coherence is determined from the degree of modulation. USE/ADVANTAGE - For use in inhomogeneous media with at least one fluid phase. The method enables a sharp distinction to be made between the coherent and non-coherent radiation components.
