The jaws (16) are mounted on the wall (18) of the stem (4), and adjustable inwards and outwards. They are mounted in the dorso-lateral area, bearing against the thighbone (24). There can be an additional jaw at the stump end. The jaws can be adjusted by screws from outside the stem, and one or more can be formed by an inflatable cushion, typically at the stump end, which is closed. The stem can have an inner section (6) shaped to fit the stump, with the stump end cushion (20) inside it. The inner section can be flexible at the periphery at least, the jaws being formed by inflatable cushions between it and the outer one. ADVANTAGE - Minimises tendency after amputation to assume an unnatural abduction position towards the outside.
