A value, characterising the quality of the liquid is detected by a sensor, pref. detecting an electrical value. A deterioration of the quality of the liquid, e.g. oil, effects a change of the sensor value. The actual sensor value is compared with a reference value giving an optimum quality. A deviation indicates the necessity of a liquid change and activates an optical and/or an acoustic signal. Upon refill of the working liquid (203,210,213,214), the reference sensor value (REF akt) to be used after the refill operation, is determined, from the amount (REF bis) of the working liquid (205,208) existing before the refill operation. Also from the reference value of the working liquid existing before the refill operation, the amount (Mneu) of the refill working liquid and the reference sensor value (REF neu) of the refill working liquid are determined. ADVANTAGE - Type method developed so that also upon refill determination of quality of working liquid is facilitated, matching service intervals can be determined, and different sorts of oil can be considered.
