The shackle is for attaching chains to a carriage which runs on an overhead rail in a mine. It consists of a U-shaped member (7) and a bolt which passes through a hole formed in the outer end of each leg of the U-shape. The bolt is made of steel which is through hardened and case hardened. The U-shaped member (7) is forged from an initially round bar and the bar cross-section is changed to provide an increased bending moment resistance. The U-shaped member is also through hardened and its surface is case-hardened to provide increased wear resistance. USE/ADVANTAGE - Shackle for supporting loads on overhead rail in a mine.
