Switch terminals are arranged phase-wise between the reactor and part of the network including a h.v. line. These terminals each have at least two series-connected switch chambers (11,12,13,14). At least two series-connected varistors (15,16,18,19) are connected in parallel with the switch chambers (11,12,13,14). The varistors (15,16,18,19) and the switch chambers (11-14) are connected together as a current and voltage limiting network. By reverse biasing part (11,12) of the chambers, the energy fed to the varistors (17,18,19) connected to the unbiased chambers (13,14) is less than with a reactor switch with a corresponding network in which the chambers are shunted by the varistors. ADVANTAGE - Short circuits between the reactor and switch can be switched off without any problems using simple circuitry.
