Reducing the bore of cylinder liners - by transformation of austenite into martensite over a certain bore region

An absorption layer is applied to the wall of the cylinder liner (1) over the region (4) facing the land (5) of the piston (3) at its top dead centre to reduce the reflection of laser light. The region (4) is then hardened by means of laser rays so that the austenite of the cast iron is transformed into martensite. The cast iron vol. increase associated with this transformation reduces the liner bore by the required measure. USE/ADVANTAGE - In the motor industry. It is more cost effective in comparison with known methods.
