Microbicidal compsns. contain 2-amino-2-phenylethylphosphonic acid(s) of formula (I) or their salts. n=0-3; x=H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, CN, OH or 2-5C alkoxycarbonyl; Y=H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-2C haloalkyl or 1-2C haloalkoxy; Z=halogen, 1-4C alkyl or 1-2C alkoxy; or two adjacent X, Y and/ior Z gps. may form an OCH2O, OCH2CH2O or OCF2O bridge. (I) are new when X and Y = H, n=1 and Z= H or P-F, U or tolyl. Also claimed are new intermediates of formula (II), where. 2-amino-2-(p-methoxyphenyl)ethylphosphonic acid and 2-amino-2- (p-trifluoromethoxyphenyl) ethylphosphonic acid are specifically claimed. Alk = 1-6C alkyl; (a) W = 2-12C acyl and (b) W = Me and Alk = Me or Et. USE - (I) are useful for controlling phytopathogenic microorganisms, esp. fungi, e.g. Botrytis, Fusarium, Helminthosporium, Ustilago, Tilletia, Cercospora and Venturia spp.
