The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of infection or disease caused by the hepatitis B virus which comprises an amount of 1- (2'-deoxy-2'-fluoro-beta-D -arabinofuranosyl) -5-iodouracil (FIAU), a derivative which corresponds to a precursor of FIAU or a derivative which corresponds to a metabolite of FIAU, sufficient to provide a weak but effective antiviral dosage of FIAU, of its precursor or its metabolite, between about 0.05 and about 1 mg / kg-day, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, its preparation process and its use for the treatment of diseases caused by HBV.
