A postage meter comprises a non-volatile memory (54) and a microcomputer (50) in communication with the non-volatile memory and a plurality of stepper motor drivers (82) for driving respective stepper motors. Positioning commands from the microcomputer (50) are directed to the plurality of stepper motor drivers. Each of the stepper motors is arranged for positioning at least one printwheel (83). The non-volatile memory (54) has stored therein data for associating each of the stepper motor drivers (82) with a respective printwheel (83).
