A postage meter comprises a non-volatile memory and amicrocomputer in communication with the non-volatile memoryand a plurality of stepper motors. Positioning commandsfrom the microcomputer are directed to the plurality ofstepper motors and includes a plurality of respectivestepper motor drivers. Each of the stepper motors arearranged for positioning at least one printwheel. Thenon-volatile memory has stored therein data for associatingeach of the stepper motor drivers with a respectiveprintwheel wherein the positioning of a selected printwheelis commanded in accordance with the data relating printwheelto stepper motor driver stored in the non-volatile memory.
